James Stenning

Head of Chambers

James was awarded a 2:1 LLB (Hons) degree in law from the University of Liverpool and went on to complete his professional exams with the College of Law. He later went on to complete a Practice Diploma in Human Rights Law and Practice, at the same institution.

Prior to being Called to the Bar, James was a Consultant Chemist, during which time he held various positions within the defence, utility and petroleum industries. He was also involved with valuing corporate intellectual property, as well as negotiating with venture capital companies and leading London based accounting firms within the realms of acquisitions during that period of his career.

James established Stenning’s Chambers with three core aspirations:

• to increase the community’s access to timely advice at reasonable fee rates;
• to encourage (through lobbying and education) amendments to be made to our Legal Practitioners Law (2019 Revision) so as to facilitate local attorneys having the ability to operate within a true 'Chambers' environment; and
• to support and promote the independence of the local Bar.

Examples of James' past instructions in general commercial, criminal and civil matters include:

• Counsel for a minority shareholder during a winding up petition, heard before the Grand Court.
• Counsel for Joint Provisional Liquidators in an insolvency, heard before the Grand Court.
• Counsel in a reported habeas corpus application that explored what legitimate powers the Royal Cayman Islands Police have to arrest and hold a resident without charge, Vanderwerff v. RCIP [2007] CILR 240.
• Counsel for an architect in an intellectual property rights dispute, exploring the applicability of the UK’s Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1956 to the Cayman Islands.
• Assisting Leading Counsel in a compensation claim made pursuant to section 65 of the Proceeds of Crime Law, 2008.
• Assisting Leading Counsel in a matter seeking compensation against Management Receivers that held assets pursuant to a restraint order.
